The Royal Navy has declared its autonomous mine-hunting capability 'operationally viable' following the successful conclusion of Phase 2 trials in the Persian Gulf. The trials involved a fleet of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) detecting and neutralizing dummy mines in high-traffic shipping lanes without human intervention.
'This is the future of mine warfare,' said the Commodore of the Mine Countermeasures Squadron. 'We are removing sailors from the minefield and increasing the speed of clearance operations by 300%.' The system utilizes advanced sonar and AI image recognition to classify threats in real-time.
The technology is now slated for wider deployment, with plans to integrate these USVs into the Queen Elizabeth Carrier Strike Group by late 2026. Export interest has already been registered by several NATO allies.
