The Australian Government has officially released the 2024 Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Plan, a strategic blueprint designed to uplift the nation's sovereign missile manufacturing capabilities. With a commitment of $16–21 billion over the next decade, the plan aims to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains and stockpile critical munitions.
Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy highlighted that the plan provides 'certainty to industry,' enabling long-term investment in local production lines for GMLRS (Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems) and 155mm artillery shells. The initiative also prioritizes the development of a skilled workforce, with new training centers announced for regional New South Wales and Victoria.
Industry leaders have welcomed the roadmap, noting that it addresses previous concerns about sporadic procurement cycles. 'This is the demand signal we've been waiting for,' said the CEO of a major Australian prime contractor. The plan is set to accelerate the delivery of Australian-made precision weapons to the ADF by 2027.
